Telecommunications

The Pocatello business community benefits from a telecommunications infrastructure that is quite robust. Digital switches and fiber optic connectivity are in place, and the area is served by several long-distance providers.

A number of companies in the Pocatello area provide sophisticated telephony systems for commercial use. And, because the region is viewed as a growing and stable market for complex telephony products, availability of the latest technology is expected to remain strong, with competitive pricing.

In June of 1998, Qwest Communications installed a state-of-the-art digital call-switching network (the DMS100) in Southeastern Idaho, providing high-speed data applications to all customers served by the network. Examples of the telecommunication equipment and services now available to Pocatello area businesses include:

  • High-speed transmission capabilities for voice, data and video communications.
  • DSL (digital subscriber line) technology, which provides "always on" high-speed Internet connection, quickly transmits large files, and allows voice and data simultaneously on a single phone line.
  • Fiber optic connectivity. Qwest has two fiber optic long distance cables extending across southern Idaho. The cables provide alternate routes and ensure reliability of the network.
  • Local calling area that ps over 180 miles and includes 37 cities.
  • Communications systems suppliers providing sophisticated switching, data interfaces and terminal equipment.
  • Qwest services include: CLASS, SONET, ISDN, DDS, Frame Relay, ATM Service, Direct Inward-Outward Dialing, SHARPS/SHNS, WATS, Voice Messaging, T-1, and Centrex. Specially designed services are also available.
